Cabinet refinishing in Del Mar

A sprayed, smooth new finish on the cabinets already in your Del Mar house or condo, instead of a full remodel.

Cabinet refinishing in Del Mar usually costs $75 to $150 per door and drawer, so a typical kitchen comes to $3,000 to $9,000. We keep your existing boxes and doors, strip the grease, sand, prime and spray them. A kitchen from the 1960s or 1970s gets a new finish and a 2 year warranty without the cost and disruption of a tear-out.

Cabinet Painting in Del Mar: what people ask first

Q01

How much does cabinet refinishing cost in Del Mar?

Cabinet refinishing in Del Mar typically costs $75 to $150 per door and drawer front, or $3,000 to $9,000 for a whole kitchen. Expect $600 to $1,500 for one bathroom vanity. How many fronts you have sets most of the price, followed by condition: cabinets with years of cooking grease, water damage under the sink or failed earlier paint need more preparation. These are the same ranges we use for cabinet painting throughout San Diego County, and the quote you get is fixed in writing.

  • Per door or drawer front: $75 to $150
  • Whole kitchen: $3,000 to $9,000 typical
  • Bathroom vanity: $600 to $1,500 typical
Q02

In a Del Mar home, is refinishing worth it, or should we remodel?

If the cabinet boxes are sound and the layout works, refinishing is usually worth it, even in an expensive home. A remodel buys a new layout; refinishing buys a new finish, for a fraction of the money and without the weeks of lost kitchen. Remodel when the layout itself is the problem. Refacing, which fits new doors and veneer over the old boxes, is a carpentry job we do not do. Our guide to what cabinet painting costs and the extra fees to expect helps you compare.

  • Layout works, boxes solid: refinish
  • Layout is the problem: remodel
  • Doors damaged but boxes fine: new doors from a cabinet shop, then we finish everything to match
Q03

Can you refinish cabinets in a Del Mar condo?

Yes. A condo kitchen gets the same process as a house, with more planning around the building. Over 40% of the city's housing shares walls or a building with neighbours, and in those homes the spraying has to stay inside your unit. Doors and drawer fronts leave to be sprayed in a controlled area. The boxes are masked off and sprayed inside the kitchen with the room sealed. Check your association's rules on work hours, parking and elevator use before you book, and tell us at the estimate so the schedule fits them.

Q04

Our Del Mar house was built in the 1960s or 1970s. What changes?

Mainly the prep, because of the home's age. Kitchens from those decades are often solid wood or plywood that refinishes well, but they may carry several old coats, sometimes oil-based. Those need a proper bonding primer, or the new enamel can peel off the old film. In homes built before 1978, sanding that old paint can disturb lead, so our EPA Lead-Safe Certified crews contain the work and clean up to the federal standard. We check the old finish at the estimate and price that prep on the quote.

Q05

Does living near the beach change how cabinets hold up?

A little, and mostly in the hardware rather than the paint. In Del Mar homes that keep doors and windows open to the sea breeze, steel hinges, screws and handles can start to corrode sooner than they would inland, and rust stains a fresh finish around them. The doors are already off during a refinish, so it is the easiest moment to fit new hinges or handles, as on this Poway kitchen, which got soft-close hinges and modern handles. A well-bonded, fully cured enamel handles normal coastal humidity in a kitchen without trouble.

Q06

How many days does a Del Mar cabinet job disrupt the kitchen?

Usually three to five working days, and the kitchen is only fully out of use for part of that. Doors and drawer fronts go first, to be sprayed off-site or in a controlled area, so the early days feel like a kitchen with open shelves. The boxes are coated in place after that, and the room is back in use once they have dried. Treat the new enamel gently for about two weeks while it cures. Over $2M

Half of Del Mar's homes were built by 1971, and the 1970s added more than any other decade, so a lot of kitchens here still sit on cabinet boxes from that era. With the typical owner-occupied home valued above $2 million, owners tend to update those kitchens carefully rather than gut them, and refinishing is the step that changes the look without opening up walls, plumbing and floors. Any home built before 1978 brings sanding of original cabinetry under the EPA's lead-safe rules, and roughly 3 in 4 Del Mar homes are older than 1980.

We are so happy with the work Lifetime Custom Painting did on our home! They painted our interior and part of the exterior, installed new baseboards, replaced the upstairs flooring, installed new vanities/toilets and completely redid our banister. Everything turned out beautiful and the attention to detail was excellent. Pablo, the project manager, was especially great to work with — professional, responsive, and made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Melissa Henss · San Diego County

Everyone on the team was professional, prompt and responsive. Luis explained the entire process and Mel's follow-through was exceptional. They delivered on the look and feel we wanted, and we would recommend their service to anyone who owns well constructed cabinets but wants to give them a refreshing new life. The original dark cabinets showed all the fingerprints, grease and dust, but the new white finish has stronger enamel protection and is much easier to clean and maintain. And it was way more cost effective than a complete remodel, we are very happy with the results!

Jamie Gallant · San Diego County

I called Lifetime Painting (referred by One Day Door and Closets) and met with Luis within a few days I was happy and excepted their bid. Gabriel and Carlos were wonderful to work with. They were professional, friendly and prompt everyday. I had my popcorn ceiling remove, textured and painted. I could not ask for a better job. They also painted a large living room, hallway and all my doors. Gabriel was very thorough and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Albert replaced all my door handles for me and I appreciated Pablo came to finish all the final little touch ups. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them. I hope to use them again.

Cabinet Painting in Del Mar: questions, answered

Straight answers for Del Mar homeowners, from a team that has painted San Diego County homes since 2007.

Do you come out to Del Mar for cabinet estimates?

Yes. Our shop in North Park is about 19 miles away, and Del Mar is well within the area we serve. At the visit we count doors and drawers, check the condition of the existing finish, and give you a fixed written quote at no charge.

Which sheen is best for Del Mar kitchen cabinets?

Satin is the usual choice: it wipes clean easily without showing every dent. Semi-gloss is tougher against scuffs and looks brighter, but it highlights any flaw in older doors. In a bright coastal kitchen with large windows, a lower sheen also cuts glare.

Can you match the colour of our new countertops or tile?

Yes. Bring a sample of the stone or tile to the estimate and we will help you choose a cabinet colour and sheen that sits well with it in your kitchen's light, since the same white can read warm or cold depending on the stone beside it.
