Cabinet Painting in National City: what people ask first

Q01

How much does cabinet refinishing cost in National City?

Most National City kitchens come in between $3,000 and $9,000, based on a rate of $75 to $150 per door or drawer. A bathroom vanity is usually $600 to $1,500. The count of doors sets the base number; condition moves it within the range. A kitchen whose earlier paint is peeling needs more preparation than one with sound varnish, and older homes add lead-safe containment. These are the same ranges as our cabinet painting across San Diego, and your quote is fixed in writing.

  • Each door or drawer front: $75 to $150
  • Typical full kitchen: $3,000 to $9,000
  • Bathroom vanity: $600 to $1,500
  • Failing old paint or lead-safe prep: priced into the quote up front
Q02

Is cabinet refinishing the same as cabinet refacing?

No, and the difference decides who you should call. Refinishing keeps your existing doors, drawer fronts and cabinet boxes and gives them a new sprayed finish, which is the work we do. Refacing swaps the doors for new ones and glues a veneer over the boxes, which is a carpentry and installation job rather than painting. If your doors are sound and you mainly want a new colour, refinishing gets you there for less. If you want a different door style, that is refacing.

  • Refinishing: same doors and boxes, new sprayed colour (our work)
  • Refacing: new doors and veneered boxes (a carpentry trade)
  • Choose refinishing when the door shape still suits you
Q03

Are 1960s and 1970s kitchen cabinets worth refinishing?

Usually, yes. Cabinets from that era were commonly built from solid wood or plywood, which takes a sprayed finish well and often outlasts the newer particleboard sold to replace it. The things that make refinishing a poor buy are damage, not age: a sink base swollen by a slow leak, doors that have warped and no longer close flat, or hinges torn out of the frame. We look at each of those at the estimate and tell you plainly if a cabinet is not worth spraying.

Q04

My cabinets were painted before and now it's peeling. Can they be fixed?

Yes, but not by painting over the peeling. Flaking usually means an earlier coat went on without degreasing or a bonding primer, so the new finish would only fail with it. We take loose paint back until what remains is firmly bonded, sand, prime and then spray. In a pre-1978 home that sanding is done with containment and cleaned up lead-safe. Homeowners in nearby Bonita run into the same problem, explained in why fresh paint peels off cabinets.

Q05

Can landlords refinish rental kitchen cabinets between tenants?

Yes, and it is one of the most cost-effective upgrades a rental kitchen can get. An empty unit lets us take every door at once and spray the boxes without working around anyone's dishes. Owners who manage several units often pick one durable colour and sheen for all of them, so a chipped door later is a quick touch-up instead of a mismatch. The lead rules still apply in a vacant unit built before 1978, and we follow them. For the rest of the unit, see all our painting in National City.

Q06

What finish goes on National City cabinets, and how long does it last?

A cabinet-grade coating sprayed over a bonding primer, and with sensible care it lasts for years. On our La Mesa kitchen, the topcoat was Milesi HRK 114 2K, in a soft white with a dark contrast colour. Wear shows first where hands land: around the pulls and along the bottom of the sink-base doors. Vanities, linen cupboards and laundry cabinets get the same process, with a vanity typically $600 to $1,500, and walls and ceilings in those rooms fall under our interior painting service.

The typical National City home was built in 1969, so the typical kitchen we are asked to refinish is a sixties or seventies original that has usually been painted at least once already. That history matters more than the colour you choose next: old coats have to be checked for adhesion before anything goes over them, and in a house built before 1978 any sanding of them is covered by the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. Only about a third of homes here are owner-occupied, so many of these kitchens belong to landlords, for whom refinishing between tenants usually makes more sense than replacing.

We are so happy with the work Lifetime Custom Painting did on our home! They painted our interior and part of the exterior, installed new baseboards, replaced the upstairs flooring, installed new vanities/toilets and completely redid our banister. Everything turned out beautiful and the attention to detail was excellent. Pablo, the project manager, was especially great to work with — professional, responsive, and made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Melissa Henss · San Diego County

Everyone on the team was professional, prompt and responsive. Luis explained the entire process and Mel's follow-through was exceptional. They delivered on the look and feel we wanted, and we would recommend their service to anyone who owns well constructed cabinets but wants to give them a refreshing new life. The original dark cabinets showed all the fingerprints, grease and dust, but the new white finish has stronger enamel protection and is much easier to clean and maintain. And it was way more cost effective than a complete remodel, we are very happy with the results!

Jamie Gallant · San Diego County

I called Lifetime Painting (referred by One Day Door and Closets) and met with Luis within a few days I was happy and excepted their bid. Gabriel and Carlos were wonderful to work with. They were professional, friendly and prompt everyday. I had my popcorn ceiling remove, textured and painted. I could not ask for a better job. They also painted a large living room, hallway and all my doors. Gabriel was very thorough and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Albert replaced all my door handles for me and I appreciated Pablo came to finish all the final little touch ups. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them. I hope to use them again.

Cabinet Painting in National City: questions, answered

Straight answers for National City homeowners, from a team that has painted San Diego County homes since 2007.

Do you do cabinet refinishing in National City?

Yes. National City is about 8 miles from our San Diego shop and well inside our regular service area. Estimates for kitchens, vanities and rental units are free.

Can you take dark wood cabinets to white?

Yes. Dark stained wood is one of the most common starting points. The bonding primer goes on first so the old stain cannot bleed through, then the colour is sprayed on top. Light colours show every flaw, so prep matters most on these jobs.

How long will we be without a kitchen?

Most cabinet-only kitchens take three to five working days, and you keep using the room for most of that time. The doors go away to be sprayed while the boxes are masked and finished in place.
