Cabinet painting in Poway

Kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities refinished with a sprayed, factory-smooth finish — the service Poway homeowners search for most.

Cabinet refinishing in Poway typically costs $75 to $150 per door and drawer, so most kitchens land between $3,000 and $9,000. We keep the solid boxes that the city's 1970s-to-1990s kitchens were built with, then degrease, sand, bonding-prime and spray them to a smooth, hard finish. You get a changed kitchen without the tear-out, and the work carries a 2 year warranty.

Cabinet Painting in Poway: what people ask first

Q01

How much does cabinet refinishing cost in Poway?

Most Poway kitchens land between $3,000 and $9,000, at roughly $75 to $150 per door and drawer. A bathroom vanity is usually $600 to $1,500. What moves the number in Poway is the cabinet itself: plenty of the city's kitchens are open-grain oak, and filling that grain for a smooth modern finish is extra work we price separately so you can decide. The same ranges apply to our cabinet painting across San Diego County.

  • Per door or drawer: $75 to $150
  • Full kitchen: $3,000 to $9,000 typical
  • Bathroom vanity: $600 to $1,500 typical
  • Oak grain filling: quoted as its own line, optional
Q02

Refinishing, refacing or re-glazing — which one do I need?

They are three different jobs. Refinishing, which is what we do, means cleaning, sanding, priming and spraying a new finish onto the doors and boxes you already have. Refacing means covering the boxes in new veneer and fitting brand-new doors, which is carpentry rather than painting. Re-glazing usually means a tinted glaze over a painted finish for an aged look. If your doors are solid and sit flat, refinishing gives the biggest change for the money.

  • Refinishing — new sprayed finish on your existing cabinets (what we do)
  • Refacing — new doors plus veneer over the boxes (a carpentry job)
  • Re-glazing — a decorative glaze layer over paint
Q03

My Poway kitchen has oak cabinets. Can they look smooth?

Yes, but it is a choice, not a default. Oak from the eighties and nineties has deep open grain, and paint alone follows that texture, so the grain still shows through the new colour. For a flat, modern look we fill the grain before priming. Some owners like a little texture showing; others want it gone. It is priced as its own line on the quote, so you can decide either way, and the sheen you pick changes how much texture shows (how to choose a cabinet finish).

Q04

Do you refinish bathroom vanities in Poway too?

Yes. Vanities get the same process as kitchen cabinets — degrease, sand, bonding primer, sprayed finish — and typically run $600 to $1,500. Bathrooms see more moisture than kitchens, so the bottom edges of doors and the area around the sink need the most careful prep. Doing a vanity in the same project as the kitchen means one schedule instead of two. For walls, ceilings or a whole-house repaint, see all our painting services in Poway.

Q05

Does Poway's summer heat affect a cabinet job?

It affects how we spray, not whether we can. Poway's August highs average about 84°F, well above the coast, and heat makes a finish dry faster than it levels. That is one reason we spray doors in a controlled area rather than in an open garage in the afternoon. Inside your home the boxes are sprayed with the house closed up, and the finish keeps hardening for a couple of weeks after we leave.

Q06

How long does a Poway kitchen take, and can we still use it?

A cabinet-only kitchen usually takes three to five working days. Our recent Poway kitchen took eight because new countertops were fitted in the same project. You keep the room for most of the job. The doors leave, the boxes are masked and sprayed in place, and the kitchen is usable most evenings. We give you a written schedule before day one.

Poway's housing is unusually concentrated in one era: about 37% of homes went up in the 1970s alone, and roughly 7 in 10 between 1970 and 1999. That is why so many Poway kitchens still have their original solid-wood or oak cabinets, and why refinishing them is usually better value than tearing them out. It also means more than half the city's homes were built before 1980, and in any built before 1978, sanding original cabinets or trim falls under the EPA's Lead-Safe rules. With three in four homes owner-occupied, most of these kitchens are being updated by families who plan to stay.

We are so happy with the work Lifetime Custom Painting did on our home! They painted our interior and part of the exterior, installed new baseboards, replaced the upstairs flooring, installed new vanities/toilets and completely redid our banister. Everything turned out beautiful and the attention to detail was excellent. Pablo, the project manager, was especially great to work with — professional, responsive, and made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Melissa Henss · San Diego County

Everyone on the team was professional, prompt and responsive. Luis explained the entire process and Mel's follow-through was exceptional. They delivered on the look and feel we wanted, and we would recommend their service to anyone who owns well constructed cabinets but wants to give them a refreshing new life. The original dark cabinets showed all the fingerprints, grease and dust, but the new white finish has stronger enamel protection and is much easier to clean and maintain. And it was way more cost effective than a complete remodel, we are very happy with the results!

Jamie Gallant · San Diego County

I called Lifetime Painting (referred by One Day Door and Closets) and met with Luis within a few days I was happy and excepted their bid. Gabriel and Carlos were wonderful to work with. They were professional, friendly and prompt everyday. I had my popcorn ceiling remove, textured and painted. I could not ask for a better job. They also painted a large living room, hallway and all my doors. Gabriel was very thorough and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Albert replaced all my door handles for me and I appreciated Pablo came to finish all the final little touch ups. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them. I hope to use them again.

Cabinet Painting in Poway: questions, answered

Straight answers for Poway homeowners, from a team that has painted San Diego County homes since 2007.

Do you work in Poway regularly?

Yes. Poway is about 23 miles from our San Diego shop and inside our regular service area, and cabinet refinishing is the service Poway homeowners search for most. Estimates are free.

Will painted cabinets chip in a busy family kitchen?

Not when the prep is done properly. We degrease, sand and use a bonding primer before spraying a hard cabinet-grade finish, which is why the work carries a 2 year warranty. The finish keeps curing for a couple of weeks, so go easy on the doors at first.

Can you change the hardware while you're at it?

Yes. The doors are already off, so it is the easiest time to switch to new handles or soft-close hinges — our recent Poway kitchen got both. If the new handles use different hole spacing, mention it at the estimate so the old holes are dealt with before spraying.
